A Suit of Armor

collected powers focus on eewoods experimental portfolio from 2017 that looks into ideas of superstitions and what people of today do to protect themselves from modern evils with tools brought down from the past. The pieces of work range from her signature beaded clothing and hand-bound books to symbolic fabrics & jewelry. This section is for all the wearable pieces from the superstitious series.

 A Suit of Armor

flows like silk & shimmers

like a silver-plated mirror.

swirling like smoke,

wrapping around the body

like a protective expanse.

now hidden by the veil of smoke,

you're able to trek the land

disregarding the evil omens,

knowing if you are veneered in sage,

you will evade the predictions.

Conceal // Wrapping Pants

Layers of a sheer fabric, lose threads & beads are pressed and sew into pants that wrap around the legs, acting as the smoke from burning sage. Blues, silver and white create a “space” that is purified, protected and sacred linked directly with the cleansing aspect of smudging. In a more literal reference to smudging, sage was stuffed into the upper hem & tie of the pants, then warmed or heat pressed, allowing the scent to be “activated”.

Shield // Shirt of Silver Beaded Armor

Interlocking & fortified, the hand beaded neck piece is like lite weight chain mail, draping the upper body. The netting also pulls in the protective properties of a mirror & its ability to ward off evil spirits with the high shine of the silver lined bugle beads and iridescent accents.

Swept // Knotted Cape on Hammered Torc

The broom & the act of sweeping has long held superstitious traditions, warding and cleansing a space of unwanted guests or bad omens. Dipping or soaking the broom in herb baths was thought to bring good luck or fortune.

To encourage the flow of luck and strengthen the brooms ability to protect it has been hand knotted with threads of blues, yellows and strands of beaded herb pouches. It is meant to be draped over the back of the body like a cape that trails and sways, at the end of a long threads is single silver bell: one extra bit of protection
